TIA,twoimpalas I need information on how castles were built from the ground up for a class project (foundation, walls, roofs, etc). Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Mikeduncan This is a brief answer, for more indepth study you can check in to the other forums below. I'm sure that alot of the members can supply even more info to your question. Walls were often built, and were better if they were, on solid bed rock, thus reguiring no foundations. If foundations were used a trench was dug and the fill was packed down or stone was set with morter. Walls varied in material and construction, wood, stone, earth or a combination of all three. Wet morter was used as was dry stone placement depending on the country and surrounding land. Post, beam, rafter, joists and the walls were used to support the floors and roof. Roofs were made from wood, sandstone, slate, or some of all of these and most covered with a thin layer of lead. This is a few ways in which castles were built.
